Koopa Paratroopa, known in Japanese as Patapata, and often simply called Paratroopa, is a recurring enemy in the Mario franchise. They first appeared in Super Mario Bros. as a winged variant of the Koopa Troopa. Koopa Paratroopas typically come in two varieties: Red Koopa Paratroopas usually fly up and down in a set path, while Green Koopa Paratroopas often bounce in the player's general direction or fly back and forth. Stomping on a Koopa Paratroopa will cause it to lose its wings, turning it into a regular Koopa Troopa. In different Mario games, their behavior patterns vary slightly, some flying horizontally, jumping, or moving in a circular pattern. They've also appeared in various Mario spin-offs, like Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros., and in some games, they are even playable characters. There is also a giant variant called Big Koopa Paratroopa, which function similarly to their smaller counterparts but are larger and can be powered up by Super Mushrooms. Koopa Paratroopas also often appear in different colors, including yellow, blue, and even gold.
