Monty Moles are common enemies in the Super Mario series, first appearing in Super Mario World. They are typically found living underground and will emerge from holes in the ground or walls, quickly pursuing Mario or other characters, or throwing rocks at them. Monty Moles have appeared in numerous games, sometimes also featuring in Whack-a-Mole-themed minigames. They may have been initially inspired by the Rocky Wrenches from Super Mario Bros. 3, but the design of Rocky Wrenches has also been influenced by Monty Moles over time. Monty Moles exhibit varying behavior patterns across games, such as throwing rocks in Super Mario 64 and charging out of walls in New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Beyond being regular enemies, Monty Moles sometimes appear as bosses, operating cannons in Super Mario Sunshine, or driving a tank in New Super Mario Bros. They are also featured in various spin-offs, including the Mario Kart, Mario Party, and Mario Golf series, sometimes as course hazards or playable characters.
